The City of Playford will boast new state-of-the-art community recreation facilities when the John McVeity Centre redevelopment is complete.

Work on the $8 million redevelopment commenced in mid-July, and will include two indoor courts, a new gymnasium and fitness room, multi-purpose community room, café, outdoor exercise park and seating, new amenities and changing rooms, as well as a crèche facility.

Future population growth in the area, and a desire to meet the needs of the community, are behind the upgrade according to City of Playford Mayor, Glenn Docherty.

“The redeveloped John McVeity Centre will benefit the entire community and provide quality facilities for families in the north to enjoy a range of sports and activities,” Mayor Docherty said.

The $8.17 million redevelopment is expected to be finished, and open to the public, by spring 2014. Council will appoint a facility manager to operate the community centre.

“Previously activities such as netball, basketball, gymnastics and soccer have taken place at the John McVeity Centre, and the redevelopment will offer this and much more,” Mayor Docherty said.

“We anticipate that the number of different of sports played at the Centre will grow, with participation numbers also increasing thanks to more court and fitness spaces. Community use will be boosted with more rooms available for functions such as birthdays or meetings.”

The centre is named after the first Mayor of the City of Munno Para, John McVeity. He was a long- serving Council member who was actively involved in the community, and instrumental in creating recreation facilities for all ages.
