The State Government’s $8million rebuild of the Gascoyne Junction town centre is complete, following the devastation of a major flooding event which destroyed the community’s essential services and infrastructure in December 2010.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman will today celebrate with locals at the official opening of the community’s new integrated retail, tourism and accommodation facility.
The $8million project was funded entirely by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
Mr Redman said the small community now had a new 24-hour fuel station, general store, tavern and restaurant, caravan park with pool and playground and a new main street.
“Royalties for Regions’ investment into the rebuild of Gascoyne Junction has transformed the quality of life of residents and improved access to everyday services such as groceries and fuel,” he said.
“While the loss of the historic Junction Hotel and Gascoyne Caravan Park in the 2010 flood was felt across the region, it is my hope these new facilities will help build social and community ties and enhance tourism.
“This investment is part of the Government’s vision to ensure regional communities are exciting and sustainable places to live, work and visit.”
The new facilities have been built above the one-in-one hundred year flood level, and have been fully operational since January 2014.
The Shire of Upper Gascoyne will retain ownership of the land and buildings, with responsibility for maintenance.
