SITA Australia (SITA) takes out top honours in the 2013 Australian Business Awards in the Environmental Sustainability category, reinforcing their position as the leaders in resource recovery. This award specifically recognises commitment to the enhancement, preservation and protection of the environment.
Now in their eighth year, the prestigious Australian Business Awards are a national awards program recognising the values of business excellence, product excellence, sustainability and responsibility. SITA was specifically recognised for their partnership with Taronga Zoo in providing tailored and innovative waste management services with the aim of maximising recycling to divert waste from landfill.
SITA’s Strategy and Development GM, Erin Tinker said, “With operations across all levels of the sustainable resource recovery value chain, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, so we are incredibly proud to be formally acknowledged with this prestigious sustainability award”.
We are equally proud to have had our ongoing financial support of the Zoo’s endangered Corroboree Frog Program acknowledged. SITA takes its social and environmental responsibilities seriously, we value the communities in which we operate and invest in a range of community and environmental initiatives”, said Ms Tinker.
SITA’s relationship with Taronga Zoo commenced in 2008 and is indicative of SITA’s partnering approach, moving beyond the traditional customer-supplier relationship. SITA actively works with its clients to provide tailored waste management solutions through both processes and education programs.
Taronga Zoo’s public areas produce about 35 tonnes of waste each month. Through an innovative approach, over 80 per cent of the waste from the Zoo’s public areas is able to be successfully recovered by SITA and diverted from landfill. SITA also partners with clients in the delivery of waste education programs to raise awareness and encourage cultural change towards sustainable waste management.
Mr Alex Halliburton GM of Capital Works and Infrastructure at Taronga Zoo said, “Taronga Zoo is a leading conservation organisation and we are pleased that the environmental sustainability ofour operations has been recognised. Importantly, our partnership with SITA has allowed us to achieve our goals of maximizing diversion of waste from landfill. The financial support from SITA has also been of great assistance with the zoo’s Corroboree Frog Program. The Corroboree Frog is a critically endangered species and without support of corporations such as SITA we could not continue the wildlife conservation work we do”.
